Labor ban or absconding report? What they mean and how to clear them

Two labor-file problems that can block a new job or visa, and what can be done about each.

Two problems on a labor file can stop you from taking a new job or getting a new visa: an absconding report and a labor ban. They sound alarming, but both can often be dealt with when you act early and bring the right papers.

Absconding report

An employer can file an absconding report when they say an employee stopped coming to work without notice. While it is open, new visas and work permits can be blocked. If the report is unfair or the situation has changed, you can apply to have it removed. This typically takes around 35 days.

Labor ban

A labor ban can stop you from working for a new employer for a period of time. Depending on your case, for example when a new employer is ready to hire you, an application can be made to lift it. This also typically takes around 35 days.

Technical issues on your labor file

Sometimes the problem is administrative: an old permit that was never closed, an unpaid fee or details that do not match. These labor technical issues typically take around 21 days to clear.

What to bring

  • Your passport copy
  • Your visa or Emirates ID copy, if you have one
  • Any letters or messages from your employer
  • Your new job offer, if you have one
Before you pay anyone
